Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) is a locally-oriented certification for organic products. The system is based on trust, social networks and participation. It can be seen as an alternative to third party intervention, instead of having a middle man certificate the produce will the power over the produce stay with the farmers
The certificate is a group-based certificate and is given to the group and not to its members. CIRHEP has very high standard and requirement for the certificate. Since it is given to the whole group every member are urged to to grow organic, otherwise it will hurt the whole group.
At the moment do CIRHEP have 30 PGS-certification groups including around 300 members.
See this short film about how the PGS certification works.
